Officer & Trooper, First Wisconsin Cavalry, Illinois National Guard, 1880

The cavalry was generally a very showy branch of the service with ornate uniforms. Whilst these men wear the fatigue cap their jackets are well embellished with yellow braid on the collar, chest, cuffs and back. The officer at left has rank piping on the cuffs and cords looped across the chest which also indicate senior status. For parades he wears white breeches and knee boots, whereas the trooper at right has standard cavalry trousers, with their yellow stripe down the seams. Both carry a cavalry sword and wear leather gauntlets.
