Britain's Volunteers, Volume 5     Volunteers of the 1890s, Part III

This CD contains over 100 illustrations of uniforms worn by volunteers in the Naval Artillery, Yeomanry, Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, Medical Staff & Cadets, in Great Britain during the 1890s. Each battalion or unit has, in most cases, two figures to illustrate the uniforms worn. In a very few instances I have only been able to find information for only one. Included in the plates are any badges I could find and a copy of the 1897 & 1898 Army List. All plates are full page illustrations, as shown immediately below.

A complete list of illustrations is shown at the bottom of the page.     Cost $24.00

3rd Glamorganshire Volunteer Rifle Corps, the Welsh Regiment

Sergeant, 1891, & Lieutenant, Cyclist Detachment, 1899

The unit headquarters were at Swansea.

The 4th Battalion retained its independent name and wore green facings on the scarlet uniform, but these changed to white at the end of the decade. The senior NCO at left wears parade uniform of helmet, tunic, trousers and equipment. His tunic has limited white piping on the front and rear openings. Rank and proficiency badges are displayed on the right sleeve, and Company or Battalion marksman award on the left. His cross belt has white metal fittings, and he carries a Martini Henry rifle.

The officer at right is shown in the photograph below. He is the officer in command of the Cyclist Detachment, and as such wears an unusual uniform. It appears to be a khaki or grey cord cap, jacket and breeches. I have chosen light khaki as this was also used by several other battalions’ cyclist sections. The jacket follows the style of the scarlet undress pattern with new white facings on the collar, shoulder straps and cuffs. His breeches are tucked into blue hose, spats and boots (from the previous uniform).
