Britain's Volunteers, Volume 3   Volunteers of the 1890s, Part I

This CD contains over 100 illustrations of uniforms worn by volunteers in the Naval Artillery, Yeomanry, Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, Medical Staff & Cadets, in Great Britain during the 1890s. Each battalion or unit has, in most cases, two figures to illustrate the uniforms worn. In a very few instances I have only been able to find information for only one. Included in the plates are any badges I could find and a copy of the 1890 Army List. All plates are full page illustrations, as shown immediately below.

A complete list of illustrations is shown at the bottom of the page.     Cost $24.00

4th Volunteer Battalion, the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment)

Pipe Major, 1899, & Cyclist, 1894

The 4th VB wore the standard uniform of the parent Regiment of scarlet doublet with blue facings and tartan trews, but with white metal buttons and badges. The piper at left wears a green doublet but with diamond buttons and distinctive 'wings'. He has a 42nd tartan kilt and full plaid, and his sporran differs to usual patterns in having three tails. Note also the cock's feathers attached to his plain glengarry, a common feature of a piper's uniform.

Like many volunteer units the 4th Battalion raised a Cyclist Detachment for added mobility and scouting purposes. At right is a rifleman of the Battalion's Cyclists. He wears the unit glengarry with red/white/green diced band. His jacket is an older type of undress with thick black binding at the edges and on the cuff. Over this he carries a 1882 or 1889 bandolier that carries 50 rounds for his Martini-Henry rifle.

Whilst I have illustrated tartan breeches I cannot confirm that these were worn by the detachment, and it may be that standard infantry breeches with their red welt were tucked into the Cyclist's stockings. To protect the ankles, boots and socks, canvas gaiters were habitually worn.
