Piper, 1st Punjab Infantry Regiment, Frontier Force Rifles, China, 1900

The band of the 3rd Regiment wore an interesting adaptation of Scottish dress whilst on service against the Boxers in China.

The turban is drill with a red fringe on the left, and red inner cap under the folds.  The drill doublet has facing coloured collar, shoulder straps and cuffs, and white piping.  Unit brass buttons are used throughout.

Black leather pipers’ belts are carried.

Voluminous drill breeches are worn, tucked into canvas gaiters with brown ankle boots.

I don’t believe the other regiments of the Force wore this unusual dress, in fact I am unsure whether they had pipe bands.  Nor am I sure how long this dress was used.
